The Borgias: 2.09 "Day of Ashes"

I typically do not post for the Borgias here, but LJ is having problems. Oddly enough they had the same problem, at the same time last year!

Introduction

Well, after last week's episode which was, well great! Poor Cesare, he really needed naughty wild sex, and did he get it! I like Katarina Sforza, she was a modern woman living in a man's world. The thing that I loved the most was that I think she thought he was hot on his horse, and decided this would be a good time as any to get him in her bed. I think that is why she really delayed "the choice" Anyway, Cesare was a man of many tastes, one of them was women. Here, he seems to be more worried about being a soldier, than sex. It seems out of character, well historically anyway. He was also very, very smart, and that is something we see in all of the episodes.

Continuing onwards: I was shocked when he kept stabbing Sforza, because he promised his sister his heart on a platter. Since he had flipped out about the nunnery, and found out that Giovanni Sforza was the one who told the french he was the patron of the convent. But it was not for annoying Ursula, it was for his sister. He is all that is wonderful and good w/Lucrezia, like a suitor in love. Then he just can't seem to get it right with women who are not Lucrezia. But that is for another posting....

Thus leading into Episode 7:  Day of Ashes. Well since lightning struck St.Peters, Rodrigo decided getting laid so often was such a great sin, along with all of his other sins, that the cardinals would all be eating sardines, with some guy reading from the bible,  Plus, from what I can see he gets more action than his son!
The Cardinal  also began giving blessings outside, and even washing an old ladies feet. Then we get to go down to Florence and watch yet another wack job (and who I know was dangerous and a big part of the Inquisition in Spain.  Well this year we have the megalomaniac Savonarola to entertain us. Let's see, he does fun things like get people to try and lynch the Medicis, he also has a large group of hooded men whipping themselves. Oh we see a very dramatic moment like cutting the hair of a wealthy woman. It's good to know all the crazy hasn't left! I miss Alfonso, he was the best crazy!

While all of this excitement is taking place, Cardinal Sforza is there, in a brown robes, spying for the Pope. You know, I am starting to like him, and I have always thought he was kind of handsome. We do remember he's part of "incest is best" club, and he sleeps with his cousin. Remember last season?

Cantarella and Cardinal Della Rovere

As we know he has been seeking revenge on the Pope, well since last year, but now more than ever. Since Cesare poisoned his wine, he has been planning ways to depose the Pope. He has gone to see crazy Savanorola, and he has been consorting with the Dominicans with a beard and brown clothes, etc..So, he has decided to see if there are any volunteers to see how much is needed to kill someone. I thought he was doing something else, but then I remembered the kid, or junior monk, said he would try it. Well, I think that he kills him by the third time.  Cardinal Della Rovere had also said being poisoned changed his life. Shame on him.

The Borgias at Home

Pope Alexander is asking God how he can repent, and suddenly Cesare blows in (love the long hair), telling him that he needs him to hear his confession. So you can guess what he confesses to, and then he gets in trouble, which I do not understand because they never had an alliance with the Sforza's. Seriously, they stood on the front lines with the French ready to destroy Rome. I think the Pope used it as an excuse to marry Lucrezia, and make Cesare realize how he must learn patience. Rodrigo also thought that since Cesare was sleeping with Katarina, he must have convinced her to come to Rome. But he did not even do that, so Rodrigo was not pleased.

The Cardinals of the Consistory at dinner with the Pope. Apparently they eat dinner like that every night, and they all must eat sardines. I think they are doing it for Lent? But I could be wrong. They also have a funny little joke about the taster asking to taste the food, and joking about how it has not killed him. Foreshadowing? perhaps.

Cardinal Sforza in Florence

Cardinal Sforza meets with Savonorola, in his Cardinal robes. He basically says that there is a problem with his Holiness. Savonorola says God speaks to him and gives him messages, which is heresy. However, Cardinal Sforza offered him a position as Cardinal in the Consistory, but he threw the cap back at the Cardinal.

Cesare & Lucrezia

Cesare goes to see Lucrezia,so he can give her the knife. So he asks if she remembers that he promised her his heart on a dinner plate. Lucrezia says yes, and he gives her the knife with the blood on it. She asks him what it says about them, if she accepts it, what does it say about them. She also would rather have her innocence back, and he said that was lost long ago. He asks her if she accepts and it was so sad, and he wanted her to say yes so badly, but then Papa comes in and and Cesare grabs it and hides it.

Then the Pope comes in, wakes up the baby and generally everyone is po'ed. Lucrezia refuses to be married, and Cesare is closing his eyes, visibly upset. Then the Pope says to Cesare that he should say nothing because he can hear what he is thinking.

He leaves yelling and screaming, and the baby wakes up. Cesare says that now they both have declared war, in a very depressed tone.  I know people say he is getting darker, but here on this show, it is clearly more and more depressed. How anger and depression work for a man like Cesare, I have no idea. What do I mean by this?  Well he could be angry and then just go on a killing spree, or go on the killing spree, and try to kill himself.

Vanozza

The Pope goes to see Vanozza, who is bathing and looking better than ever. He tells her that there has been an accident and Giovanni Sforza has fallen on a knife that Cesare was holding. I love how he and Cesare speak in code, so that they are saying something, without saying it. She will be vetting Lucrezia's suitors and thus it begins. She turns everyone down, and then sees the brother of a suitor she likes, and you can already see what she is going to do. Naughty girl!

Cesare, Machiavelli and Gold

Their first meeting is in a dark place, where Cesare is hooded in black. They discuss the situation with the banks and the Medicis in Florence. There is also talk of Medici gold and vatican funds, and if the money is safe. Cesare says he needs more from him. So, Machiavelli draws him a map of where the gold is being moved and gives it to Cesare. He puts his posse together, but first they have to confront Savonarola.

So, clever Cesare, makes a big entrance with the mercenaries acting as Papal Guards. He gives him a paper from the Pope which I believe tells him to stop preaching that he is the sole recipient of God's word? I was confused by all that religious stuff. All I know is that Savonarola yells to his now full congregation that "I will use this to wipe my ass!" Classy, and what are you 5?  I can't imagine this dude is becoming so powerful, and pledging to burn all sodomites. When Cesare and Co. are outside, they are shocked and you can see how disturbed Micheletto looks as they watch this. Then after Cesare tells some kid that he is going to put his boot up his ass (he was being a brat), he start yelling sodomite. Micheletto runs through the crowd and they all follow and go get the gold!

So they all go and get the gold! Machiavelli's map was right on target, and actually there is more out there.

So, Cesare is so excited when he shows his father as he tells him it is enough for a siege on Forni! (please correct me with any spelling issues). Cesare says that he will drag Katarina Sforza to him in chains. So, the Pope asks him if he would be a soldier, and Cesare says yes, it is his hearts truest desire. Poor sexy Cesare! But Rodrigo says, who would advise and work by his side? Not Juan. The sad thing is that there is no where to put Juan, because he is a fool and idiot.  Rodrigo tells him that he is learning patience, and he is very glad that this is finally happening. Then the final nail on the coffin is when he tells Cesare to embrace his brother when he comes back tomorrow. Cesare says no, he will be in Florence doing the Cardinal's work, and turns his back on his Dad. Rodrigo looks frustrated, but he really has no choice, and who knows what Cesare is going to do, as he is clearly in a bad state; but still sexy.

So that's it for this episode, hope you enjoy!
